A drunk driver was stopped by police with 12 people crammed into the back of a ute in the early hours of New Year's Day in southeast Queensland.

Footage shows the passengers lying on top of each other before leaping out the back of the 4WD after it pulled over on the side of the road in Edens Landing.

The 21-year-old driver was found to have blood alcohol level of 0.038 per cent and has been charged with drink driving.

The limit for probationary drivers is 0 per cent.

He has also been charged with exceeding the carrying capacity of a vehicle, unlicensed driving, possessing drug utensil and drink driving.

Police said the passengers were packed "side by side like sardines".

"As the vehicle stopped 12 people scrambled out of the rear tray of the vehicle," Inspector Neal White said.

"Clearly the fact that we have had so many people in the vehicle is absolutely crazy and extremely dangerous."

The Toyota Hilux was stopped at around 2.15am on New Year's Day on Castille Crescent.
